Port guide

Falmouth cruise port guide

Falmouth is a purpose-built cruise port on Jamaica's north coast, about 29 km east of Montego Bay and roughly 60 miles west of Ocho Rios. The terminal opened in 2011 beside a Georgian town, and its pier has two berths that handle the largest ships. Most things worth seeing are a drive away: Martha Brae bamboo rafting and Chukka's Good Hope estate are about 20-25 minutes inland, Rose Hall Great House 20-30 minutes west, Doctor's Cave Beach in Montego Bay around 45 minutes, and Dunn's River Falls 70-90 minutes east. The old town, with its 1795 church, Court House and Market Street, is a 5-10 minute walk and needs no transport. Pick one main activity rather than two, and leave an hour of margin to get back to the ship. Hurricane Melissa struck western Jamaica as a Category 5 storm in October 2025; Falmouth was the last major Jamaican cruise port to reopen, on 2 December 2025, and individual attractions reopened on different dates, so confirm that your chosen stop is running. Luminous Lagoon is a night attraction and rarely fits a normal port day.

What Falmouth is good for

  • Adventure (39 tours)
Chukka at Good Hope offers dune buggies, ziplines, e-bikes, tubing and bamboo rafting about 25 minutes inland.
  • Beaches
Bamboo Beach Club and Burwood Beach are close; Doctor's Cave Beach in Montego Bay is a 45-minute drive.
  • Culture & history (12 tours)
Georgian Falmouth, Rose Hall and Greenwood Great Houses cover the plantation and colonial history.
  • Sightseeing (47 tours)
Dunn's River Falls is the headline day trip but takes most of the port day.
  • Wildlife & nature (20 tours)
Dolphin and shark encounters at Dolphin Cove (Ocho Rios), and the Luminous Lagoon at night.

On your own or a cruise-line tour?

Falmouth town, Martha Brae rafting, Rose Hall and Greenwood are easy to arrange alone: registered taxis wait at the pier with posted rates, and the drives are 10–30 minutes. Montego Bay beaches also work by taxi, but at roughly 45 minutes each way allow a generous margin. Dunn's River Falls, Dolphin Cove near Ocho Rios and rafting at Lethe are the risky ones, at 1 to 1.5 hours each way, so take a cruise-line tour for those. The Luminous Lagoon is a night-time trip, which usually falls after a 15:00–17:00 all aboard. If you go independently, use an operator with a fixed price that commits to returning you with at least an hour to spare.

How people miss the ship here

  • Dunn's River Falls is described as 1 hour to 90 minutes each way; with queues at the falls, an independent trip leaves little slack before a 15:00-17:00 all-aboard.
  • Montego Bay (Doctor's Cave Beach, Hip Strip) is 29 km west and about 45 minutes by road; traffic on the A1 can add time. Allow at least an hour margin.
  • Luminous Lagoon tours start at sunset, usually after ships sail; booking them independently on a normal call risks the ship or simply misses the glow.
  • Independent operators near the port can overbook or run late. Cruise-line tours are held for delays; independent ones are not.
  • Post-hurricane closures: some attractions, such as Martha Brae rafting, have closed temporarily since Hurricane Melissa, so a prebooked independent tour could be cancelled at short notice.

Questions

Falmouth cruise port FAQ

Do you need a tender at Falmouth, Jamaica?

No. Ships dock at the Historic Falmouth Cruise Port, a purpose-built pier with two berths opened in 2011, so you walk off directly. The terminal has shops, restaurants and a taxi rank, and Falmouth's old town is about a 5-10 minute walk from the gate.

How far is Falmouth cruise port from Montego Bay?

About 29 km (18 miles) by road, roughly 35-40 minutes by taxi in normal traffic. Doctor's Cave Beach is about 45 minutes. Allow extra time for the return, since the A1 can slow near the city.

Can you get to Dunn's River Falls from Falmouth?

Yes, but it is far: allow 70–90 minutes each way. Entry is US$25 for adult visitors. Most cruise passengers choose a ship tour so the ship will wait if the road is slow.

How much does Martha Brae bamboo rafting cost?

Expect about US$70 per two-person raft for roughly an hour on the river, or more for packaged tours with transport. Rafting operations were affected by Hurricane Melissa in late 2025, so confirm current availability before you go.

Can you see the Luminous Lagoon on a cruise day?

Rarely. Tours run after dark, usually from sunset, and most ships leave between 15:00 and 17:00. Boats from Glistening Waters Marina cost about US$25 per person. Check whether your ship has a late departure before booking.

Is Falmouth safe for cruise passengers?

The port area is a secured terminal. The US State Department rates Jamaica Level 2 (increased caution) and advises avoiding certain areas; vendors outside the gate can be persistent. Use registered taxis or ship tours and stay on main streets in town.

Are JUTA taxis the official taxis at Falmouth?

JUTA (Jamaica Union of Travellers Association) is the officially sanctioned taxi group, and registered taxis wait at a sheltered rank at the pier with posted flat rates, usually US$5-15 for nearby trips. Agree the price before you get in and avoid unmarked cars.

Is Falmouth open after Hurricane Melissa?

Yes. The port reopened on 2 December 2025, the last major Jamaican cruise port to do so, with Caribbean Princess the first ship in. Dunn's River Falls reopened 11 November 2025. Individual attractions vary, so check with your cruise line or operator.
