Port guide

Cozumel cruise port guide

Cozumel is a low, flat island about 20 km off the Yucatan coast and one of the busiest cruise stops in the Caribbean. Ships use three piers: Punta Langosta, which opens straight into the town of San Miguel; and the International Pier and Puerta Maya, which sit a few kilometres south and need a taxi to reach town. Check which pier your ship is using, because it changes how you spend the day. Most of the good beaches and reefs are on the sheltered west and south-west coast, a 10 to 40 minute taxi from the piers, and the whole west side is part of a national marine park, so expect a small reef fee for many water activities. The windward east coast has rougher water and strong currents and is better for a drive than a swim. The island is easy to do on your own, with taxis on posted zone fares and beach clubs selling day passes. The two things that go wrong are queues for the taxi back at the end of the day and bad sea or wind in the afternoon. Aim to be back at the pier an hour before all-aboard, and be cautious about the Playa del Carmen ferry and mainland ruins, which carry no ship guarantee unless booked through the cruise line.

What Cozumel is good for

  • Snorkeling (27 tours)
The main draw. Choices range from shore snorkeling at Chankanaab, Money Bar or Playa Corona to boat trips to Palancar, Colombia reef and the shallow El Cielo starfish sandbar; the whole west coast is a marine park with a small fee.
  • Beaches
West-coast beach clubs sell all-inclusive day passes from about $59 to $81 or cheaper entry with a minimum spend. The calmer west side is the one to use.
  • Culture & history (25 tours)
San Gervasio and El Cedral Maya sites, the island museum and downtown San Miguel. Many tours combine ruins with ATVs or jeeps.
  • Adventure (27 tours)
ATV rides to Jade Caverns and cenotes, jeep tours around the island, ziplining and parasailing, typically 1-4.5 hours.
  • Wildlife & nature (25 tours)
Punta Sur's lagoon boat ride shows American crocodiles and birds; turtles are common on snorkel trips.

  1. 1

    San Miguel downtown and waterfront

Town 5 min walk 1.5-3 hours

The main square, waterfront promenade, shops and restaurants are all within a few blocks of Punta Langosta, so this works on a short call or as a no-plan option.

    Fits your day
  2. 2

Museo de la Isla de Cozumel

    Attraction 1-1.5 hours

Island museum on the waterfront in San Miguel, a quiet indoor stop for island history and natural history on a hot or rainy day.

  3. 3

    Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park

Snorkel & dive 10–15 min from the pier 3-4 hours

Park with a beach, a freshwater lagoon, shallow-entry snorkeling and underwater statues, with lockers, gear rental and food. Closest full-service snorkel option to the southern piers.

    Fits your day
  4. 4

Playa San Francisco and south-west beach clubs

Beach 15–25 min from the pier 4-6 hours

Long white-sand stretch on the sheltered west coast, with beach clubs, pools and calm water. The easiest relaxed beach day from the piers.

    Fits your day
  5. 5

    Playa Palancar and Palancar Reef

Snorkel & dive 4 hours for a boat trip

Quiet south-west beach with a swim dock and boat access to Palancar Reef, a large coral reef with walls and swim-throughs. Reef snorkeling here is by boat; the reef itself lies about 1 km off the beach.

  6. 6

El Cedral Maya site and village

    Ruins & history 1-1.5 hours

Small village in the south of the island with a small Maya structure; most visitors see it as a stop on an ATV or jeep tour rather than a destination on its own.

  7. 7

    San Gervasio Maya site

Ruins & history 2-3 hours including the drive

Cozumel's main pre-Hispanic site, once the island's largest settlement and a pilgrimage centre. Only part of the central area is open to visitors.

The 120 km2 park covers the reefs south of the International Pier; shore options such as Dzul-Ha/Money Bar and Playa Corona are the nearest reef access from the piers.

On your own or a cruise-line tour?

Cozumel is one of the easier Caribbean ports to do independently: taxis run on posted zone fares, beach clubs and snorkel operators sell day passes, and nothing on the island is more than about 40 minutes from the piers. Alone, the sensible options are downtown on foot from Punta Langosta, a beach club or Chankanaab by taxi, or a short boat snorkel. The pressure points are the taxi queue on the way back, afternoon wind that cancels or spoils boat trips, and Punta Sur and the ruins, where the drive eats a big share of a short call. Most independent bookings do not hold the ship, so keep a buffer of at least an hour. Book through the cruise line for anything on the mainland (Tulum, Chichen Itza, Xcaret), because the ship waits for its own tours.

How people miss the ship here

  • Ferry to Playa del Carmen: the crossing is only 35-45 minutes, but you must reach the ferry pier, wait for a sailing, and return the same way. Sailings are about every 30 minutes, the last departure from Playa is around 9-10 PM, yet a late or full ferry, rough sea or a long queue can strand you. Tickets bought independently do not hold the ship.
  • Tulum, Xcaret and other mainland sites add a road trip of an hour or more each way on top of the ferry, which leaves little margin on a normal port day. Only go on a cruise-line excursion that guarantees the ship will wait, or on a very long call.
  • Taxi queue at the end of the day: the return line at the southern piers can add 20-30 minutes on busy days, and several ships often share the island.
  • Wind and sea state: boat snorkel and catamaran trips can be cancelled or delayed, and east-coast roads and beaches are exposed. Pick morning departures.
  • Ship time versus island time: Cozumel is UTC-5 all year, so ship time can differ by an hour depending on which clock your ship uses. Use ship time for the all-aboard deadline and aim to be back an hour early.
  • Punta Sur and far-south trips: 35-45 minute drives each way plus park time; on a call under 7 hours this is tight.
  • Hurricane season (September-October peak): itineraries are often changed with little notice; non-refundable independent bookings are risky.
Logistics

Where ships dock and getting around

Punta Langosta

Ships dock here Walkable to town

Enclosed terminal with duty-free, several restaurants, restrooms and free but patchy Wi-Fi. The downtown ferry pier for Playa del Carmen is next to it.

Getting to town: Walk: the terminal opens straight into downtown San Miguel, and the main square is about 5 minutes away. Taxis are only needed for beaches and sights.

Usually used by: Open to all lines and the busiest terminal: Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Oceania, Royal Caribbean, Viking and others. Assignments change daily.

International Pier (SSA Mexico)

Ships dock here 10-15 min to town

Duty-free and waterfront shops and restaurants at the gangway, an air-conditioned waiting area and a taxi rank. It is next to Puerta Maya (the entrances are under 500 m apart), and a taxi between the two piers is about $8.

Getting to town: Taxi to downtown, about $8 per car on the posted fare list (roughly 5 km). A waterfront sidewalk exists but is hot and exposed.

Usually used by: Mainly Royal Caribbean and Celebrity; Disney, MSC and some Norwegian ships also use it, especially in busy season.

Puerta Maya

Ships dock here 10-15 min to town

Open-air shopping plaza with 50+ shops, vendor carts, pharmacy, large duty-free store, bars, restaurants (e.g. Tres Amigos, Pancho's Backyard), tourist information and free but unreliable Wi-Fi.

Getting to town: Taxi to downtown, about $8–12 per car on zone fares. At roughly 5–8 km it is the farthest of the three piers from town.

Usually used by: Carnival Corporation brands: Carnival, Princess and Holland America, plus Cunard and Seabourn. It has the most berths.

Taxi

Union taxis charge fixed fares by zone, not by meter, and the list is posted at the piers. A fare covers up to four passengers; five passengers cost about 45% more and a van for 6-8 costs double. Pay cash, agree the fare first, tip 10-15%. Expect a 20-30 minute queue for a taxi back at peak return time. Uber and similar apps are not available. The official zone list is old (approved 2016), so treat prices as approximate.

Atlantic season runs 1 June to 30 November, peaking in September and October, which are also Cozumel's wettest months. Hurricane Beryl made landfall near Tulum as a Category 1 hurricane on 5 July 2024 and cut power on Cozumel. When a storm threatens, cruise lines normally reroute days ahead and skip the call.

Sea temperature runs from about 26°C in January to 29–30°C in August–October. Reef visibility is usually best from November to May.

Practical information

Currency
Mexican peso (MXN)
US dollars
Yes, widely at piers, shops, taxis and beach clubs, usually at a poor exchange rate; taxi fares are posted in USD and pesos are also accepted. Taxis do not take cards, so carry small bills. Pesos give better value for small purchases and park entrances.
Language
Spanish; English is widely spoken in tourist areas
Time zone
UTC-5 year-round (Quintana Roo left daylight saving time in 2015 and stays on UTC-5)
Ship time
Cozumel stays on UTC-5 all year. US Eastern time is UTC-5 only in winter; from mid-March to early November it is UTC-4, so a ship running on US Eastern time is then one hour ahead of the island, while one on US Central daylight time matches it. Ship time at the port varies by line and itinerary, so confirm in the daily programme and set your own watch to ship time for the all-aboard deadline.
Safety
The US State Department advises increased caution in Quintana Roo because of crime, mainly citing Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum rather than Cozumel. Most problems reported on the island are petty, such as taxi overcharging. The east coast has strong surf and rip currents, so swim on the west side.
Questions

Cozumel cruise port FAQ

Where do cruise ships dock in Cozumel?

Ships use three piers on the west coast: Punta Langosta in downtown San Miguel, and the International Pier and Puerta Maya a few kilometres to the south. Carnival-family lines usually use Puerta Maya, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity favour the International Pier, and Norwegian, MSC and Disney often use Punta Langosta. Your cruise line confirms the pier the evening before.

How far is Cozumel's cruise port from town?

From Punta Langosta, downtown San Miguel is a short walk, roughly 5 minutes to the main square. The International Pier and Puerta Maya are about 5-6 km south (3-4 miles), a 10-15 minute taxi ride that costs around $8-12 per car depending on the source.

Do I need a taxi or can I walk?

Only Punta Langosta is walkable to town. From the other two piers you need a taxi to reach town, beaches or ruins. Fares are fixed by zone, posted at the pier, cover up to four people, and are normally paid in cash. Ride-hailing apps do not operate on the island.

What is the best snorkeling near the cruise port?

Shore snorkeling at Chankanaab Park, Money Bar (Dzul-Ha) and Playa Corona are the nearest. Boat trips go to Palancar, Colombia and El Cielo. Mornings are calmer and clearer. The whole coast is a marine park, so a small conservation fee often applies and reef-safe sunscreen is required.

Can I take the ferry to Playa del Carmen from a cruise ship day?

Yes, the passenger ferry leaves from the downtown pier next to Punta Langosta and takes about 35-45 minutes, but it is not run by the cruise line and the ship will not wait if you are late. Only consider it with a long port call and a generous buffer.

Is it safe to visit Cozumel on a cruise?

The US State Department advises increased caution in Quintana Roo but does not single out Cozumel. Problems near the piers are mostly petty, such as taxi overcharging and pickpocketing. Stay in tourist areas, agree taxi fares first and avoid swimming on the rough east coast.

How much time do I need for Punta Sur or the Maya ruins?

Punta Sur is a 35-45 minute drive each way plus 3-4 hours in the park, so it needs about 7-8 hours ashore. San Gervasio takes 2-3 hours including the drive and closes at 15:30. Short calls are better suited to Chankanaab, a beach club or downtown.

What currency should I use in Cozumel?

The Mexican peso is the local currency, but US dollars are accepted at piers, shops, taxis and beach clubs, usually at a weaker rate than pesos. Taxis take cash only. Carry small bills for taxis, lockers and tips, and pesos for park entrances.
